The Congress party has taken a sharp dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over a recent remark made by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. The comment has sparked political buzz as it comes shortly after PM Modi returned from a five-nation tour.
While speaking at an event in Nagpur on Wednesday, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat spoke about the age of retirement in public life. He referred to a statement by Sangh ideologue Moropant Pingley, who had said that a person should step aside after turning 75 to allow others to take charge.
Bhagwat reportedly said, “When the shawl of 75 years is wrapped over you, it means it is time to let others do the work.” This was seen by many as a subtle hint aimed at senior leaders, including PM Modi, who will turn 75 on September 17, 2025.
Reacting to this, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and wrote in Hindi: “Poor award-seeking Prime Minister! What a homecoming – as soon as he returned, the Sarsanghchalak reminded him that he’ll be 75 next year.”
He added a sharp remark: “The Prime Minister can also remind the Sarsanghchalak that he too turns 75 on September 11, 2025. One arrow, two targets!”
This sarcastic comment by Ramesh suggests that both the Prime Minister and the RSS chief will be turning 75 next year—raising questions on whether both should step down, as per the idea mentioned by Bhagwat.
The Congress has often pointed to the BJP’s unwritten rule that leaders above the age of 75 should retire from active politics. They had earlier highlighted this during the 2014 elections when senior BJP leaders like LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi were sidelined due to age.
This latest remark has once again reignited discussions around age, leadership roles, and succession planning within the BJP and the Sangh Parivar. The BJP, however, has not officially responded to Jairam Ramesh’s comment.
