OpenAI may soon add a new “Skills” feature to ChatGPT, making it easier for users to reuse instructions without typing them again and again. The feature was recently introduced in Codex, OpenAI’s AI-powered coding agent, and a tipster now claims the same system could be coming to ChatGPT.
According to Tibor Blaho, Lead Engineer at AIRPM, OpenAI is planning to bring Skills to ChatGPT along with a dedicated Skills editor. There may also be an option that allows users to convert their custom GPTs into Skills. While OpenAI has not officially confirmed this update, the feature could significantly improve how people interact with ChatGPT.
Skills can be understood as reusable shortcuts made up of instructions, scripts, or resources. Instead of writing long prompts every time, users could activate a Skill by typing a short command. This would help users save time and maintain consistency across different chat sessions.
For example, someone who uses ChatGPT for research could create a Skill that tells the AI to rely only on provided text or links. Another Skill could instruct ChatGPT to reply in a fixed number of words, avoid certain punctuation, or always write in paragraphs. Once saved, these instructions could be used instantly in any new conversation.
OpenAI built the Skills feature in Codex using Anthropic’s agentskills.io standard. This system allows users to trigger a Skill by pressing the forward slash (/) key and then typing the shortcut name. Reports suggest the same slash-command system could be introduced in ChatGPT, making the feature easy and intuitive to use.
In addition to Skills themselves, OpenAI may also add a Skills editor. This tool would allow users to view, edit, and update their existing Skills whenever needed. Another expected feature is the ability to convert custom GPTs into Skills. Custom GPTs are mini chatbots designed for specific tasks, such as fiction writing or coding help. However, they currently work only within a fixed chat. Skills would remove this limitation by making the instructions usable across all chats.
This update could be especially useful for power users who rely on ChatGPT for daily tasks like writing, research, or data analysis. It would reduce repetition and make workflows smoother.
That said, OpenAI has not made any official announcement about bringing Skills to ChatGPT. Until the company confirms or launches the feature, users are advised to treat these reports with caution.
If introduced, Skills could mark a major upgrade in how ChatGPT is customized and used on a daily basis.
