Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation has created a political storm. Many are now asking whether opposition leaders played a behind-the-scenes role in his decision to step down. His interactions with at least three senior opposition MPs on July 21 — the first day of the Parliament’s Monsoon Session — are being closely examined.
On that morning, Dhankhar left Parliament in his official car along with a Congress Rajya Sabha MP. They went to his official residence. Later in the day, this MP openly shared that he had multiple conversations with Dhankhar that day. By 4 PM, the same MP handed him an impeachment motion signed by more than 60 opposition MPs. What began as a small group of signatories grew quickly, adding to the pressure. That MP even posted about the interaction on social media.
Another opposition MP also stayed in regular contact with Dhankhar throughout the day. According to sources, this MP acted as a messenger between Dhankhar and senior leaders of the opposition. He reportedly helped shape how the opposition viewed Dhankhar’s situation and role.
A third MP, known for his legal knowledge, was also involved. Sources say he advised Dhankhar to stop focusing on a case involving Justice Yashwant Varma. Instead, he encouraged him to shift his attention to Justice Shekhar Yadav, who has been accused of making controversial remarks. This MP also promised Dhankhar strong support from lawyers if he pursued that issue.
Though Dhankhar has not confirmed any of these meetings or claims, these behind-the-scenes talks suggest that the resignation may not have been entirely personal or sudden. The timing, pressure from opposition MPs, and legal concerns seem to have all played a role.
