The fashion world is mourning the loss of Valentino Garavani, one of its greatest designers. The legendary couturier passed away peacefully at his home in Rome on January 19, at the age of 93. Known for his love of beauty, Valentino once famously said, “I love beauty, it’s not my fault.”
Valentino was more than a designer. He was a pioneer who showed the world that colour could define a brand. His most famous creation, Valentino Red, became a global symbol of romance, power, and elegance. This bold shade was not just a colour but a signature that people instantly recognised.
Indian designers also feel a deep connection to Valentino’s legacy. Many believe he shared India’s love for rich colours and fine craftsmanship. Designer Gaurav Gupta says Valentino proved that colour can carry emotion and memory. Sunil Sethi, Chairman of FDCI, remembers him as a master who beautifully balanced femininity with strong structure.
Valentino also had great respect for Indian artisans. Long before it became common, he openly praised Indian craftsmanship. His designs often featured zardozi and aari embroidery, and he always gave credit to the skilled karigars behind the work. Designers like Payal Jain and Rahul Mishra recall how deeply he valued hand embroidery and the human effort behind every stitch.
For many young designers, Valentino was a mentor from afar. Suneet Varma remembers interning with him in his early years and being inspired by his attention to detail and understanding of how women want to feel in fashion.
As fashion moves toward automation, Valentino’s passing marks the end of an era where the human hand was the greatest luxury. His legacy will live on in colour, craft, and timeless beauty.
