Fashion World Bids Farewell to Valentino Garavani

Valentino Garavani

The global fashion industry is mourning the death of legendary Italian designer Valentino Garavani, who passed away at the age of 93 at his residence in Rome. Tributes from designers, celebrities and political leaders describe his passing as the end of a golden era in haute couture.

Valentino’s foundation confirmed that he died peacefully, surrounded by his family. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni led national tributes, calling him an “eternal symbol of Italian haute couture” and thanking him for elevating Italy’s cultural identity through fashion.

Leading designers also paid emotional homage. Alessandro Michele, who currently oversees Valentino’s creative direction, described him as a central figure in Italian cultural history, praising his deep respect for beauty, craftsmanship and artistic discipline. Former creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli remembered Valentino as a mentor who believed beauty was not decoration, but protection and joy.

The Armani family, following the recent death of Giorgio Armani, called Valentino an unmatched master of elegance whose legacy leaves a deep void in fashion. Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow also shared personal memories, recalling his warmth, humour and love for classic glamour.

For many, Valentino’s death marks the loss of one of the last “old-world” fashion maestros — designers who built their reputations on artistry rather than aggressive commercial branding. Alongside names like Karl Lagerfeld and Armani, Valentino belonged to a generation that shaped fashion as cultural expression.

He was best known for “Valentino red,” a signature shade that became a symbol of timeless elegance. Over six decades, his designs dressed icons such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, Julia Roberts, Zendaya and Carey Mulligan, defining unforgettable red-carpet moments.

Though he retired in 2008, Valentino remained active in the arts through his foundation. His influence, vision and devotion to beauty continue to shape fashion, long after his final bow.
