How Vivo’s X Series Grew From Gimbals to Smart AI Cameras

Vivo and ZEISS: Five Years of Redefining Smartphone Photography

Vivo has launched its new X300 and X300 Pro smartphones, continuing the brand’s focus on powerful cameras. To understand how the X series has changed over the years, Gadgets 360 spoke with Vikas Tagra, Head of Product Management at Vivo India. He explained how the company moved from hardware innovations like gimbals to advanced AI camera tools.

The Journey of the X Series

Vikas said Vivo always aims to create technology that truly helps users. The brand’s first big camera breakthrough was the gimbal system in the 2020 X50 Pro. No other company had put a mini gimbal into a smartphone at that time. Vivo then strengthened its cameras through a long-term partnership with ZEISS, now in its sixth year. Both companies share the goal of offering world-class photography to users.

Later, Vivo focused heavily on telephoto innovation, trying to make its zoom camera experience different from other phones. The new X300 Pro even supports a telephoto extender kit, a feature previously limited to the Ultra model.

Why Vivo Moved to Flat Screens

Another visible change in the X-series is the shift from curved displays to flat screens. Vikas said the move was driven by user feedback. Many premium smartphones now use flat screens, so Vivo wanted customers to feel familiar and comfortable with the design. The flat display also provides better grip, more durability, and fewer accidental touches.

Vikas explained that Vivo’s design journey moved from curved screens to quad-curve designs and now to sleek, flat displays, all based on what consumers prefer.

The Growing Role of AI in Photography

AI has become the next big step in smartphone photography. Vikas said AI helps the camera hardware perform better by powering intelligent algorithms. But Vivo adds AI features only when they genuinely benefit users.

Vivo’s AI Four Season Portrait allows users to create photos that look like they were taken in places with cherry blossoms, snow, or other scenic backgrounds. Over 27 million users in India have used Vivo’s AI-generated photography tools. The company also introduced AI Festive Portraits and now offers AI Storyboard, which helps users make creative, Instagram-ready photos easily.

The Vivo X300 and X300 Pro will be available in India starting next week, continuing the X-series tradition of combining strong hardware with smarter AI tools.
