Every EV Should Be Green
Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, emphasized that all electric vehicles (EVs) in India should be powered by renewable energy. Speaking at the launch of Refex Mobility’s EV fleet in Delhi, Joshi said, “The vision is simple: every EV should charge and recharge using clean energy.” He stressed that this step is crucial to reducing oil imports and cutting harmful emissions.
Renewable Energy Capacity in India
Joshi highlighted India’s growing renewable energy capacity. Out of the nation’s total installed power capacity of 495 gigawatts, around 50% — or 253 gigawatts — comes from renewable sources. The minister underlined solar energy’s key role in powering EVs efficiently and sustainably.
Supporting EV Ecosystem
The minister noted that his ministry is actively promoting future mobility through financial and technical support. The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), India’s first PSU to back the EV revolution, is offering up to 80% financial assistance for both fleet operators and those establishing EV charging infrastructure. Joshi said, “We are empowering the entire EV ecosystem, helping businesses and individuals transition smoothly to clean mobility.”
Green Hydrogen for Next-Gen Mobility
Pralhad Joshi also discussed India’s push for green hydrogen. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the government is promoting hydrogen-fueled vehicles. Five pilot projects have been awarded, deploying 37 hydrogen vehicles supported by nine new hydrogen refueling stations. The minister described this as the next frontier for clean transport, complementing the EV movement powered by renewable energy.
The Road Ahead
Joshi’s message was clear: India’s electric mobility future depends on clean energy. Fleet owners, corporates, and citizens need to adopt solar power and renewable sources to unlock the full potential of EVs. Combining renewable energy with EVs and green hydrogen initiatives could reduce emissions, lower dependence on fossil fuels, and advance India’s sustainable transport goals.
