Azam Khan Out of Jail, 81 Cases Still Loom Over Him

Three Verdicts Could Shape His Political Future

Azam Khan walked out of jail on Tuesday, ending nearly two years behind bars, but his legal battles are far from over. A total of 81 cases remain pending against him, while three cases are nearing completion, with verdicts expected in the coming weeks. Khan’s release has triggered widespread speculation about his political and legal next steps.

Khan, a senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader, has kept observers guessing with his cryptic remarks. When asked why no SP leader had come to receive him, he quipped, “I am a small leader. Why would a big leader come to receive me?” This was interpreted as a subtle dig at the SP leadership, especially after his wife, Tanzeem Khan, previously expressed having no hope of assistance from the party, relying only on “Allah.”

While rumors have circulated about him possibly joining the BSP, Khan has avoided commenting, leaving the political landscape uncertain. A key meeting with Akhilesh Yadav is scheduled for October 8, which could influence both party dynamics and the tone of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

On the legal front, Khan must appear before the MP/MLA court on October 1 for an enemy property land grab case, where the court has mandated his personal presence. Most of the 81 pending cases relate to alleged illegalities in the construction of Maulana Ali Jauhar University, a project Khan oversees as lifetime chancellor and chairman of the Jauhar Trust. Charges include money laundering, land grab, corruption, tax violations, and irregularities in construction.

Among the three cases nearing resolution, one involves hate speech during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where Khan allegedly encouraged voters to exceed polling hours. Another concerns derogatory remarks against the late SP leader Amar Singh and his family in 2018. Legal experts indicate that the verdicts could arrive soon, potentially influencing both his political and personal standing.

Despite his release, Azam Khan’s journey ahead remains complex, balancing political ambitions and ongoing legal scrutiny, making the coming weeks critical for his future.
