Opposition To Announce Vice President Candidate Soon

Leaders of the INDIA bloc are meeting to decide their candidate for India’s upcoming vice-presidential election. The opposition parties are holding discussions at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence. Sources said the candidate will be a consensus choice and the final decision is expected by evening of August 18 or latest by August 19.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has already announced Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan from Tamil Nadu as its nominee. The vice-presidential election is scheduled for September 9. The NDA move has sparked speculation that the opposition may also choose a south Indian candidate to counter Radhakrishnan.

Reports suggest that DMK’s Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi N Siva is being considered as a potential opposition nominee. However, sources clarified that the opposition parties have not officially discussed any name yet. Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain said, “Different parties are making suggestions. Congress is consulting everyone. Whatever is decided will be shared by evening or tomorrow.”

CPI(M) MP John Brittas added that the INDIA bloc is discussing strategy and selecting a competent candidate. “Tiruchi Siva is a capable person, but there are many options. We will find the right person,” he said. Siva himself said he is unaware of the discussions and will follow the party’s decision.

Meanwhile, the NDA is seeking broader support for Radhakrishnan. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reportedly spoke to Kharge to request backing. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has been appointed as the NDA’s election agent. The YSR Congress Party has also decided to support Radhakrishnan, with its 11 MPs likely to boost the ruling alliance’s position.

While the NDA appears organized with a clear nominee, the opposition is keen to select a candidate who could generate cross-voting from BJP MPs. Discussions among INDIA bloc parties continue as they aim to present a united front and choose someone with wide acceptability.

With the election less than a month away, both sides are strategizing carefully. The vice-presidential contest may see a significant challenge if the opposition finalizes a strong consensus candidate. The final announcement is expected soon, setting the stage for a key political showdown.
