OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Pulse, a new proactive feature for its AI chatbot that delivers daily personalised updates to users. Unlike the standard reactive ChatGPT, which responds only when prompted, Pulse works independently, researching user-related information overnight to present tailored insights every morning. The feature is currently available exclusively to Pro subscribers, and users can control the updates they receive.
CEO Sam Altman described Pulse as a shift from reactive AI to a more proactive approach. The feature collects data from chat history, user feedback, connected apps, and memory to understand what is relevant to each user. This allows ChatGPT to generate updates on a wide range of topics, from daily schedules and meeting reminders to personalised suggestions, such as healthy dinner ideas or steps toward long-term goals like triathlon training.
For users who choose to integrate Gmail and Google Calendar, Pulse can further enhance its recommendations, creating meeting agendas, reminders for birthdays, or restaurant suggestions for trips. By default, these integrations are turned off, and users can also use a Curate option to request research on specific topics for future updates, giving them partial control over the information generated.
However, the feature raises significant privacy concerns. Pulse requires continuous access to personal data, stored and processed on OpenAI’s servers. Users must share potentially sensitive information, including financial details, health records, or personal schedules, to get the most accurate updates. Altman acknowledges that the feature “performs super well if you tell ChatGPT more about what’s important to you,” highlighting the trade-off between convenience and privacy.
While Pulse promises greater ease and a more personalised AI experience, it also underscores the blurred lines of privacy in the age of generative AI. Users must weigh the benefits of tailored daily updates against the risk of personal data exposure, including the potential consequences of a data breach. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, features like ChatGPT Pulse represent both an innovation in user experience and a critical conversation around data security and privacy.
