September 21, 2025, marks a special day for Tata Motors as its first compact SUV, the Tata Nexon, turns eight. Since its launch in 2017, the Nexon has played a pivotal role in Tata Motors’ resurgence in the Indian passenger vehicle market. With cumulative sales of 887,607 units till August 2025, the Nexon is now poised to cross the 900,000-unit milestone, becoming the first Tata SUV to achieve this landmark.
The Nexon’s journey has been impressive, riding on its multi-powertrain strategy and stylish design. Offered in petrol, diesel, electric, and CNG versions, the Nexon caters to a wide range of customers, making it one of the most versatile SUVs in the country. With 76 variants—31 petrol, 28 diesel, 9 electric, and 8 CNG—there is virtually a Nexon for every budget. Recent GST-driven price reductions of up to Rs 1.25 lakh have further enhanced its appeal, making it more competitive in the highly contested compact SUV segment.
Rapid Sales Growth
The Nexon crossed 200,000 sales in June 2021, 45 months after its launch. From there, growth accelerated dramatically. It took just 16 months to reach 400,000 units in October 2022. The run to 500,000 units took a mere six months, and the next half a million units followed within seven months each, reaching 700,000 in July 2024 and 800,000 in February 2025. With the first five months of FY2026 already accounting for 66,984 units, September 2025 is likely to be the month when the Nexon officially surpasses 900,000 sales.
The SUV enjoyed its peak fiscal performance in FY2023, selling 172,138 units—a 39% increase over FY2022—and accounted for 33% of Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle sales. The Nexon also dominated as India’s best-selling SUV for three consecutive fiscals: FY2022, FY2023, and FY2024. Although it lost the No. 1 SUV title to the Tata Punch in FY2025, the Nexon is making a strong comeback in FY2026, with sales outpacing its sibling Punch.
Strong Market Presence
The compact SUV segment, where the Nexon competes, has become increasingly crowded. In FY2018, its main rival was the Maruti Brezza. Today, competition includes the Tata Punch, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra 3XO, Skoda Kushaq, and Kia Syros. Despite the heightened competition, the Nexon’s blend of design, features, and multiple powertrain options has kept it relevant and desirable.
The Nexon has received two major facelifts since its debut. The first, in January 2020, modernized its styling, while the second, in September 2023, introduced a comprehensive refresh of interiors, technology, and overall aesthetics. Autocar India notes that while the petrol engine may lack excitement compared to some rivals, the Nexon delivers a robust SUV experience. Its EV variant, meanwhile, has taken a half-generation leap, offering a benchmark in affordable electric SUVs.
Contribution to Tata Motors
Since its launch, the Nexon has significantly boosted Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle sales. From 172,504 units in FY2017 (pre-Nexon) to 210,200 units in FY2018 and 231,512 in FY2019, the Nexon helped Tata regain market traction. Despite the COVID-impacted FY2020, Tata bounced back in FY2022 with 373,138 units, and went on to achieve record sales of 582,915 units in FY2024.
The Nexon’s share of Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle sales has been consistently high. Starting with 13% in FY2018, it rose to 24% in FY2019, crossed 30% in FY2020, and peaked at 33% in FY2022. Even with the emergence of newer models like the Punch, Altroz, and Tiago, the Nexon maintained a strong contribution of around 29–32% of Tata Motors’ total PV sales in recent years.
Looking Ahead: Next-Gen Nexon
Tata Motors is already preparing the next-generation Nexon, internally codenamed ‘Garud’, expected to launch in the second half of 2026. Based on a heavily modified version of the current X1 platform, the new Nexon is expected to feature a major overhaul in exterior and interior design. While petrol and CNG engines are likely to continue, the future of the 1.5-litre diesel engine is uncertain due to shrinking demand in the compact SUV segment. An updated Nexon EV is also expected, potentially aligned with the new combustion engine variants.
Conclusion
Eight years on, the Tata Nexon remains a cornerstone of Tata Motors’ SUV strategy. With over 887,000 units sold and the 900,000 mark within reach, it continues to demonstrate strong consumer appeal. Its multi-powertrain strategy, extensive variant options, and periodic facelifts have ensured it remains competitive against newer rivals in the compact SUV segment. As Tata gears up for the next-generation Nexon, the SUV’s journey from a market disruptor to a sales milestone achiever is a testament to the brand’s vision and adaptability.
With the GST price cut and rising demand in FY2026, the Nexon is set to regain momentum, proving that even after eight years, it is still a powerful driver of Tata Motors’ growth story.
