Gemini users may finally get chat search on Android
Google is likely adding a long-awaited search bar to its Gemini app on Android. A Reddit user recently posted a screenshot showing a new “Search for chats” bar in the app’s menu. This new feature could help users quickly find old conversations without endless scrolling.
While Gemini users on iOS and the web already have the search option, Android users have had to scroll through long chat lists to find past messages. The lack of this basic search tool has been a big complaint from users.
The search bar was spotted by Reddit user u/JosefTor7, who shared the image on the r/Bard group. The screenshot showed the search bar placed inside the app’s hamburger menu (top left corner). However, not everyone can see the feature yet, even after updating the app.
This may be because Google is rolling out the feature slowly in phases. Some users could get access sooner, while others might have to wait a few weeks. The Reddit user noted that the search bar wasn’t listed in the update notes, which suggests Google may have added it quietly through a server-side update.
The new feature is a big improvement. It allows users to perform a semantic search, meaning the app will understand both the words and the intent behind the search. This will make it easier to find useful information from past conversations, even if users don’t remember exact words.
One user on Reddit joked, “Kind of funny that the search company took so long to build a very basic full text search into one of their most important products on their own operating system.”
While Google has not officially announced the feature yet, its appearance on Android devices suggests that an update is on the way. This comes as OpenAI’s ChatGPT also recently introduced a similar chat search feature.
As Google continues to improve Gemini, users hope more helpful features like this will roll out faster in the future. For now, Android users can look forward to easier chat access very soon.
