ChatGPT May Get ‘Skills’ Feature for Faster, Smarter Prompts

ChatGPT Plus Adds Record Mode for macOS Users

OpenAI may soon add a new “Skills” feature to ChatGPT, making it easier for users to reuse instructions without typing the same prompts again and again. The feature was recently introduced in Codex, OpenAI’s AI-powered coding agent, and a tipster now claims it could be coming to ChatGPT as well.

According to Tibor Blaho, Lead Engineer at AIRPM, OpenAI is planning to bring Skills to ChatGPT in a similar format. Skills are reusable sets of instructions, prompts, or scripts that can be activated instantly using shortcut commands. This could help users save time and maintain consistency across different chat sessions.

Skills work like quick commands. Instead of repeating long instructions in every new chat, users could simply type a short shortcut to activate a saved rule. For example, a user could create a skill that tells ChatGPT to write answers in short paragraphs, avoid certain punctuation, stick to a fixed word limit, or stay strictly based on provided sources or links.

In Codex, the Skills feature is built on the agentskills.io standard. Users activate a skill by pressing the forward slash key (/) followed by the shortcut they have created. This slash command system is easy to use and allows quick access to specific instructions at any time. The same system could be introduced in ChatGPT if the feature is rolled out.

The tipster also claims that ChatGPT may get a dedicated Skills editor. This tool would allow users to view, edit, and update their saved skills whenever needed. Another expected option is the ability to convert a custom GPT into a Skill.

Custom GPTs are small, purpose-built chatbots designed to perform specific tasks, such as writing fiction or analysing data. However, they work only within a fixed chat environment. Skills could remove this limitation by allowing the same instructions to be used across multiple chats, making them more flexible and useful.

At the moment, OpenAI has not officially confirmed or announced the Skills feature for ChatGPT. The information is based on leaks and early signals, so users are advised to wait for an official update.

If introduced, Skills could significantly improve how people interact with ChatGPT by making everyday tasks faster, simpler, and more personalised.
