OpenAI has officially rolled out the new group chat feature in ChatGPT for users around the world. Earlier, this feature was available only in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. After a successful pilot test, the company has now made it accessible to all logged-in users, including those on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.
The group chat feature allows multiple people to collaborate in the same chat window with ChatGPT. Users can share ideas, ask questions together, and even get the AI’s help during group discussions. This makes ChatGPT more useful for teamwork, study groups, planning, and quick brainstorming sessions.
To create a group chat, users simply need to tap the icon on the top-right corner of the ChatGPT interface. Once a group is created, the platform generates a shareable link. People who receive this link can join the group instantly. Each group can have up to 20 participants.
ChatGPT can also understand the context of messages written in the group. Users can directly tag the AI for assistance, or it can automatically respond when it detects a question that needs help. Members can react to messages, reply to specific texts, and view all group chats in a dedicated section in the sidebar. The creator of the group can add or remove participants, while other members can rename the group or mute notifications.
Another helpful feature is the ability to convert an existing one-on-one chat with ChatGPT into a group. When this is done, ChatGPT creates a copy of the original chat and turns it into a shared conversation. This way, users can continue their private chat separately.
Participants can also customise how ChatGPT behaves in each group by adding custom instructions. These instructions apply only to that particular group and do not change ChatGPT’s behaviour elsewhere.
OpenAI says the goal of this feature is to make collaboration easier and smoother for everyone, whether they are working on projects, studying, or planning personal tasks. With global access now rolled out, users worldwide can start creating group chats and explore new ways to use ChatGPT in shared conversations.
