Grey Hair May Signal More Than Ageing, Say Experts

Grey hair is often seen as a normal part of getting older, but new research suggests it may reveal more about your overall health. Experts now say that premature greying could be linked to oxidative stress — a process that damages body cells and may increase the risk of serious diseases, including cancer.

According to Dr. Vivek Bande, a surgical oncologist at TGH Onco-Life Cancer Centre, Talegaon, when hair turns grey before 30 in men or 25 in women, it might signal that the body is under oxidative stress. This means harmful molecules, called free radicals, are damaging the cells, including those responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives hair its colour.

Dr. Bande explains that oxidative stress can harm not only hair follicles but also DNA and tissues in the body, potentially contributing to the development of cancer over time. However, he also clarifies that no direct link has been found between premature greying and cancer — it is more of a warning sign than a cause.

Common factors such as smoking, alcohol use, obesity, poor diet, pollution, and genetic history remain the major causes of cancer. Still, premature greying can sometimes be an early indicator of internal imbalance or unhealthy lifestyle choices.

Experts say that lifestyle habits play a key role in both hair greying and cancer risk. Continuous exposure to pollution, high stress, and poor nutrition can accelerate cellular damage. Meanwhile, people who follow a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, exercise regularly, and avoid smoking or drinking are less likely to face premature greying or related health problems.

If you notice early greying, doctors recommend not panicking but getting a health check-up to rule out any underlying issues. It’s also important to focus on improving your overall well-being through healthy habits.
