Alibaba Launches Qwen 3 Coder AI With Smart Tools

Alibaba Introduces Powerful New AI Coding Model
Alibaba has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) model for coding called Qwen 3 Coder. This advanced model is designed to help users write, edit, and run code using smart, human-like tools. It is available for free download and can be used for both personal and business projects under the Apache 2.0 license.

Key Features of Qwen 3 Coder
The Qwen 3 Coder is a mixture-of-experts (MoE) model with 480 billion parameters, but it works with 35 billion active parameters at a time. It supports a long context length of 2,56,000 tokens, which can be increased to 1 million tokens using special techniques. This allows it to understand and work with large amounts of code at once.

One of the most exciting features is its agentic capabilities. These include:

  • Agentic coding: The AI can write and improve code like a human assistant.
  • Agentic browser use: It can search the internet as part of its tasks.
  • Agentic tool use: It can use other software tools to complete jobs.

Open-Source Tools and Performance
Along with the model, Alibaba also released a command-line tool called Qwen Code. This tool allows developers to interact with the AI to code, debug, and even run programs in an IDE. It is based on Gemini Code and includes special prompts and function-calling features.

Alibaba claims that Qwen 3 Coder matches the performance of Claude Sonnet 4, one of the top AI models for coding. It also achieved state-of-the-art results on the SWE-Bench Verified test, thanks to its ability to run 20,000 tasks at the same time on Alibaba Cloud.

Compatibility and Integration
Although built for Qwen 3 Coder, Qwen Code can also work with OpenAI SDK and Claude Code, but developers must request an API key from the Alibaba Cloud Model Studio.

With this release, Alibaba is aiming to lead in open-source AI for developers around the world.
