The central government is preparing to introduce the Income Tax Bill, 2025 in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, aiming to implement it from April 1, 2026. On Wednesday, the 31-member Select Committee of the Lok Sabha unanimously adopted the draft legislation, clearing the way for its passage.
Key Details of the Committee’s Work
The committee, chaired by BJP leader Baijayant Panda, reviewed the draft bill and made 285 recommendations. Out of these, 250 have been accepted and will be included in the draft report. Most changes are related to terminology and alternative wording in the legislation.
Notably, no opposition MP objected to the bill, signaling smooth passage in Parliament. Sources say the draft legislation spans 3,790 pages across seven volumes, making it one of the most comprehensive income tax laws to date.
What Happens Next
The committee’s report will be submitted to the government, which will review the recommendations and make final changes. The revised bill is expected to be tabled in the Lok Sabha on July 21, the first day of the monsoon session.
Once discussed and passed, the new income tax law will replace the existing framework, aiming to simplify compliance and improve clarity for taxpayers. According to officials, the changes will focus on modernizing language, reducing ambiguity, and creating a transparent tax structure.
Why It Matters
The move to introduce a new income tax law comes after years of deliberation. The government wants to align the taxation system with global practices and make it easier for businesses and individuals to understand and follow. By preparing early, authorities plan to ensure smooth implementation from the start of the next financial year in April 2026.
With bipartisan support and no objections from the opposition, the Income Tax Bill, 2025, is expected to sail through Parliament without major hurdles.
