Outbreak in Darbhanga Village
A diarrhoea outbreak has struck Sara Mohanpur village in Bihar’s Darbhanga district, killing two people and hospitalising over 70 residents. Darbhanga Civil Surgeon Arun Kumar confirmed that children were first affected two days ago, but the infection has since spread to most villagers.
A special medical camp has been set up at the village to provide immediate care. Patients with severe conditions are being treated at Sadar Hospital and Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Authorities assured that adequate antibiotics, disinfectants, and medical staff are available, along with extra beds at the hospitals.
What is Diarrhoea?
Diarrhoea is a condition characterised by loose or watery stools. It is often mild and resolves within a few days, but can sometimes signal a more serious health problem. Diarrhoea can lead to fluid and nutrient loss, which may cause complications if left untreated.
Symptoms to Watch For
Common symptoms include:
- Loose or watery stool
- Belly cramps or bloating
- Urgent need to pass stool
- Nausea
Severe diarrhoea symptoms may include:
- Fever
- Severe abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Blood or mucus in stool
- Weight loss
Causes of Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea can result from various factors:
- Viruses: Rotavirus, norovirus, enteric adenoviruses, hepatitis viruses
- Bacteria and parasites: E. coli, Clostridioides difficile, contaminated food or water
- Medications: Antibiotics disrupting gut bacteria
- Food intolerances: Lactose, fructose, artificial sweeteners
- Surgery or digestive disorders: IBS, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, SIBO
Potential Complications
The biggest risk of diarrhoea is dehydration, especially among infants, elderly people, and those with weak immunity. Untreated dehydration can lead to kidney failure, stroke, heart attack, or even death.
Preventive Measures
To prevent diarrhoea, follow these steps:
- Practice hygiene: Wash hands with soap or use sanitizer
- Vaccination: Rotavirus vaccine for children
- Food safety: Cook food thoroughly and store it at safe temperatures
- Safe drinking habits: Avoid untreated water, tap water, ice cubes, and unpasteurised milk or juice, especially while traveling
- Caution with raw foods: Avoid raw or undercooked meats
Health officials are closely monitoring the situation in Darbhanga and assure residents that with timely medical intervention, the outbreak is expected to be brought under control soon.
