Starbucks has named Indian-origin technology leader Anand Varadarajan as its new Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The company announced that he will take charge on January 19 and will be part of Starbucks’ Executive Leadership Team. Varadarajan will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol.

He replaces Deb Hall Lefevre, who retired from the role in September. Starbucks said the appointment is an important step as the company looks to strengthen its technology systems and expand its digital capabilities across global markets.

Anand Varadarajan brings nearly two decades of experience from Amazon, where he spent close to 19 years working on large and complex technology platforms. Most recently, he was responsible for technology and supply chain systems for Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery Stores business. In this role, he helped build systems that supported large-scale operations while keeping customer needs at the centre.

Before joining Amazon, Varadarajan worked as a software engineer at Oracle and also gained experience by working with several technology startups. This mix of experience has helped him develop strong skills in building secure, reliable, and scalable technology systems.

Starbucks said Varadarajan’s deep understanding of technology and operations will support the company’s long-term goals. His role will focus on improving digital platforms, strengthening data security, and using technology to make store operations smoother and more efficient. The company believes his leadership will help deliver better experiences for both customers and employees.

Varadarajan has strong academic credentials as well. He is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). He holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from Purdue University and another master’s degree in computer science from the University of Washington. This combination of engineering and computer science education has shaped his approach to solving complex technology problems.

Starbucks said the new CTO’s appointment is expected to speed up innovation and support the company’s global growth plans. As Starbucks continues to invest in digital ordering, supply chain technology, and in-store systems, Varadarajan’s experience is seen as a key asset.

With this leadership change, Starbucks aims to stay competitive, modernise its technology infrastructure, and continue offering convenient and reliable services to customers worldwide.
