Agratas, the Tata Group’s battery manufacturing company, is making fast progress on its new battery plant in Sanand, Gujarat. The 320-acre facility is set to become one of India’s largest and most advanced battery manufacturing sites, with an initial annual production capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh).
The construction site is bustling with activity. Over 2,000 workers and more than 700 personnel from vendor companies are involved in building the plant. The structural steel framework is almost finished, marking a major milestone in the project.
Anand Sodha, Vice President of Supply Chain at Agratas, said the project is moving quickly and will strengthen India’s domestic capabilities in advanced battery cell production. The plant aims to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles and energy storage solutions in India.
Tata Projects Limited and Tata Consulting Engineers are supporting the construction. Rahul Sharma, Strategic Business Unit Head at Tata Projects, highlighted the focus on building large-scale manufacturing infrastructure while following sustainable construction practices.
Apart from the physical plant, Agratas is also creating an integrated supply chain system. This will allow real-time tracking of imports, exports, and domestic logistics. The company plans to implement automated operations and eco-friendly transport solutions to meet international standards.
Agratas is part of the Tata Group’s global battery business. In addition to the Sanand facility, the company is building another plant in Bridgwater, United Kingdom. Both facilities will serve customers in the mobility sector, including electric vehicles, as well as energy storage systems.
The Sanand project is a key part of India’s clean energy plans. By building domestic battery production, the country aims to support electric vehicle adoption and strengthen its energy storage capabilities. The facility will also create employment opportunities and boost the local economy while positioning India as a major player in the global battery industry.
With the structural work nearly complete, Agratas is on track to deliver one of India’s most advanced battery manufacturing plants. The project reflects Tata Group’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and supporting the country’s energy transition.
