WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help users quickly understand what they missed in their chats. This new tool, called Message Summaries, is currently available in the US and will soon launch in other countries and languages.
Quick Chat Summaries
With this new feature, users can simply tap the “unread messages” button in a chat, and Meta AI will show a short, bullet-point summary of what those messages say. This can save time, especially if you’re busy or haven’t checked your phone in a while.
WhatsApp says the feature is private and safe. It uses a technology called Private Processing Technology, which ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can see the messages or summaries. The feature is optional and turned off by default. Users can choose which chats they want to allow for summarising, using the Advanced Chat Privacy settings.
Meta explained that the goal is to give users a quick view of what’s happening in their chats without opening and reading every message in detail.
What is Private Processing Technology?
This is Meta’s secure cloud system where AI can work with data without exposing it to others. For example, it can summarise your unread WhatsApp messages or help with writing suggestions, but your private messages stay safe and unread by Meta staff.
More AI Features on WhatsApp
Over the past year, Meta has added several AI features to WhatsApp. These include the ability to ask Meta AI questions directly in a chat and even generate images in real time using AI.
WhatsApp to Show Ads Soon
WhatsApp has also started testing ads in its Updates tab, similar to how Instagram shows ads in Stories. These ads will be based on basic data like your city, language, and followed channels.
WhatsApp will also make money through Channel subscriptions and promotions, with payments handled by app stores.
Overall, WhatsApp’s new AI tools aim to make messaging smarter, faster, and more useful—without losing privacy.
