Kerala Polls 2026: Many Congress Parties Confuse Voters

As Kerala prepares for the 2026 Assembly elections, many voters are facing confusion due to several political parties using the “Congress” name. This has made it difficult for people to clearly identify which party belongs to which alliance.

The state’s politics mainly revolves around three major alliances. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is led by the Communist parties, while the United Democratic Front (UDF) is led by the Indian National Congress. The third front is the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The confusion mainly comes from the presence of many smaller parties that include the word “Congress” in their names but are part of different alliances. These include Kerala Congress (M), Kerala Congress (Joseph), Kerala Congress (Jacob), Kerala Congress (B), and Janadhipathya Kerala Congress. There is also Congress (Secular) and the Nationalist Congress Party, which adds to the mix.

Even though these parties share similar names, they have different leaders, ideologies, and political goals. Some are part of the LDF, while others support the UDF. This makes it harder for voters, especially at the grassroots level, to understand their choices.

The Election Commission has announced that voting will take place on April 9, 2026, and counting will happen on May 4. The main contest is expected between the LDF and UDF, with the NDA also trying to gain ground.

In the last election held in 2021, the LDF made history by returning to power for a second term. With multiple Congress-named parties in the fray, the 2026 elections could see confusion play a key role in influencing voter decisions.
