Texas is emerging as a major hub for space industry investment, driven by expansion plans from Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin. The state is already seeing strong economic gains and could attract billions more in new funding and thousands of jobs.
SpaceX has invested around $3 billion at its Starbase facility in Boca Chica, South Texas. Over the past two years, the company has generated more than $13 billion in economic output and created over 24,000 direct and indirect jobs. Reports suggest SpaceX is planning additional investments worth several hundred million dollars in the near future.
Blue Origin is also looking to expand its footprint in Texas. The company is reportedly considering setting up a new manufacturing and logistics centre that could involve an investment of up to $1 billion and create around 2,000 jobs. Cities in the Austin region are competing to host the project, with state agencies seeking suitable land near the I-35 corridor.
Williamson County, north of Austin, already plays a key role in the space sector. It is home to Firefly Aerospace, one of the fastest-growing space launch and in-space transportation companies in the US. In 2025, Williamson County and the city of Cedar Park formed the Central Texas Spaceport Development Corporation to attract more space-related investment. Firefly has since announced plans to expand its headquarters and operations in the region.
SpaceX continues to receive strong backing from state and federal authorities. In 2025, it secured a $17.3 million grant to expand a semiconductor research facility near Austin, a move expected to generate over 400 jobs. The company may also gain additional land near its Starbase site, though the proposal has raised environmental concerns.
Texas already benefits greatly from the space sector, including NASA’s long presence in the state. With new private investments on the horizon, space technology remains a key part of Texas’s long-term economic strategy.
