Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 28th Commonwealth Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers (CSPOC) on Thursday, January 15, in New Delhi. The event will take place at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, located inside the Parliament House Complex.
According to an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Prime Minister Modi will also address the delegates during the opening session. The conference is a major international parliamentary event within the Commonwealth framework.
The high-level conference will be chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. It is expected to see participation from 61 Speakers and Presiding Officers. These representatives will come from 42 Commonwealth countries. In addition, delegates from four semi-autonomous parliaments from different parts of the world will also attend the event.
The conference highlights India’s growing role as an important centre for global parliamentary dialogue. It also reflects the country’s commitment to democratic cooperation and strong legislative traditions within the Commonwealth.
As per the PMO release, the conference will discuss several important and current parliamentary issues. One major focus will be the role of Speakers and Presiding Officers in protecting and strengthening democratic institutions. These discussions are especially important at a time when parliaments across the world are facing fast political, social, and technological changes.
Key topics at the conference will include the use of artificial intelligence in parliamentary work and the impact of social media on lawmakers. Delegates will discuss both the benefits and challenges that these digital tools bring to democratic governance.
Another important area of discussion will be how to improve public understanding of Parliament. Participants will also explore new ways to encourage citizen involvement in democracy beyond just voting during elections.
The PMO said the conference will offer a global platform for Speakers and Presiding Officers to share their experiences. They will exchange best practices related to law-making processes, parliamentary ethics, and maintaining the integrity of legislative institutions.
The CSPOC is a respected forum within the Commonwealth and is held regularly to improve cooperation among member parliaments. Hosting the 28th edition shows India’s strong support for democratic values and parliamentary traditions.
