Surat: India’s Hidden Fashion Capital

Beyond Mumbai and Delhi
The debate over India’s fashion capital usually centers on Mumbai and Delhi. Mumbaikars favor chic, casual styles, while Delhiites embrace bold, head-turning outfits. Yet, the real powerhouse of Indian fashion isn’t on the runway or in glossy showrooms—it’s Surat.

The Heart of India’s Textiles
Surat is the city behind the materials that define Indian fashion. Fabrics, trims, sequins, embroidery, and even diamonds used in high-end outfits are produced here. It is India’s leading hub for man-made fibres (MMF), powering the country’s multi-billion-dollar fashion industry from behind the scenes.

Massive Production, Impressive Scale
The city operates around 3.5 lakh powerlooms, producing nearly 800 crore metres of grey fabric each year. Surat also hosts about 470 processing units with a combined daily capacity of 75,000 metres, totaling an annual output of 1,200 crore metres of processed fabric. This scale ensures that fabrics seen in Mumbai and Delhi stores or on fashion runways originate from Surat’s looms, dye houses, and workshops.

Integrated Fashion Ecosystem
Surat’s strength lies in its vertical integration. Yarn manufacturing, weaving, dyeing, printing, embroidery, and finishing all happen in one city. This speed and efficiency allow trends spotted on Bollywood red carpets or international fashion weeks to be replicated and distributed across India within weeks.

The 3Ss: Speed, Scale, Sparkle
Surat is home to around 3,000 embroidery machines and 300 schiffli units, producing intricate sequins, zari, and embellishments. These are the foundation of India’s festive and bridal wear, which are then showcased in Delhi and Mumbai. The city’s ability to combine speed, scale, and sparkle makes it the true backbone of Indian fashion.

Why Surat Deserves the Crown
While Mumbai and Delhi may shine in media, luxury retail, and runway shows, Surat powers the industry with its unmatched production capacity and craftsmanship. From fabrics to embellishments, the city quietly drives trends and supports India’s fashion ecosystem, earning it the rightful title of India’s hidden fashion capital.
