OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, has announced that it will open its first office in India by the end of 2025. The office will be located in New Delhi, and hiring has already started for key roles.
OpenAI Hiring in India
Currently, OpenAI has only one employee in India — Pragya Misra, who serves as the Head of Public Policy. She works on building connections with the government and other organisations. Now, the company has posted three new sales-related job openings in India.
The positions include:
- Account Director, Digital Natives
- Account Director, Large Enterprise
- Account Director, Strategics
These roles suggest that OpenAI is preparing to expand its business operations in the country.
Why India Matters to OpenAI
Jake Wilczynski, OpenAI’s Head of Communications for the Asia-Pacific region, confirmed the news in a LinkedIn post. He said India is ChatGPT’s second-largest market, after the United States.
In fact, the number of active ChatGPT users in India has grown four times in the last year. India is also one of the top five developer markets worldwide for OpenAI, with the highest number of students using ChatGPT.
New Affordable Plan for India
To strengthen its presence in the country, OpenAI recently launched a new subscription plan called ChatGPT Go, priced at ₹399 per month.
This is much cheaper than the ChatGPT Plus plan (₹1,999 per month) and the Pro plan (₹19,900 per month). ChatGPT Go offers benefits like:
- Higher message limits
- Larger file upload
- More image generation features
The plan is designed to make ChatGPT more affordable and accessible for Indian users.
What’s Next
The opening of OpenAI’s New Delhi office is a major step in the company’s global expansion. With a rapidly growing user base, especially among students and developers, India is expected to play an important role in OpenAI’s future plans.
