OpenAI’s Sora App Now on Android: Create AI Videos Easily

OpenAI has finally released its Sora app for Android smartphones, about a month after launching it for iPhone users. The app is now available to download from the Google Play Store in select countries — the US, Canada, Japan, and South Korea. However, it’s not yet available in India.

From iPhone to Android Users

Sora by OpenAI was first introduced on September 30 and was limited to iOS users in the US and Canada through an invite-only system. Now, Android users running Android 6.0 or newer can also use the app. OpenAI has expanded access to Japan and South Korea while also removing the invite-only restriction for users in these four countries.

The app is powered by OpenAI’s Sora 2 AI model, the same technology that allows users to create realistic videos using text or image inputs. With this release, OpenAI aims to make AI-powered video creation accessible to more people across different platforms.

What Makes Sora Special

The Sora app interface looks similar to TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. However, unlike those platforms that feature human-created videos, Sora focuses on AI-generated videos. Users can simply type text prompts or upload reference images and clips, and the AI will turn them into short videos.

Sora’s AI model can adjust backgrounds, modify visuals, and even add sound to create what OpenAI calls “hyperreal videos.” These creations can be shared on Sora’s own feed, where others can like, comment, and share — creating a growing AI video community.

Growing Global Reach

Initially available to a small group of users, Sora has quickly expanded to more countries. The launch of the Android version marks an important step in OpenAI’s plan to reach a global audience. While Indian users will have to wait for access, the app’s popularity is already rising in other regions.

With its creative AI features and social sharing tools, Sora by OpenAI is shaping up to be the next big thing in AI-generated video platforms.
