Easier Voice Control Coming to Gemini
Google is reportedly testing a new feature for its Gemini AI assistant that could make giving voice commands much easier. According to Android Authority, version 16.42.61 of the Google app includes references to a new “mic lock” option. This feature will let users hold or lock the microphone button while speaking, allowing them to issue longer voice commands without getting cut off mid-sentence.
At present, Gemini often stops listening if a user pauses while talking, unless they use the Gemini Live mode. The new feature aims to fix this by letting people continue speaking naturally — just like sending long voice messages on WhatsApp. Users will be able to long-press the mic icon in the Gemini input box to start recording, then “lock” it to keep the mic open. When they finish speaking, they can tap the stop button to end the input.
New Design and UI Updates
Apart from the mic lock, Google is also experimenting with new design elements in Gemini. Reports mention a redesigned input box that expands automatically when a user starts typing, similar to the Gemini interface seen on Android devices. Screenshots show that once the mic lock is enabled, the usual mic icon changes into a stop button, giving users more control over their voice interactions.
This feature would make Gemini much more user-friendly, especially for longer or more complex commands. Users could pause while thinking or structuring their requests without worrying about the assistant cutting them off.
However, it’s still unclear when or if this feature will roll out to everyone. Many new tools spotted during app testing don’t always appear in the final version. But if Google introduces this mic lock widely, it could make talking to Gemini smoother and more natural across all devices.
