Google has announced two new features for its Gemini app on Android — Temporary Chats and Personalised Responses. These updates aim to give users more privacy and a more customised experience when chatting with the AI assistant.
Temporary Chats: A Privacy Boost
Temporary Chats let users talk to Gemini without the conversation being stored permanently. Unlike regular chats, these sessions are not saved for training Google’s AI models or for future references by Gemini. Instead, the chats are only kept on Google’s servers for up to 72 hours to process responses and feedback, and then they are automatically deleted.
This feature is useful for discussing sensitive topics where users don’t want Gemini to remember or reuse information. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has already been offering a similar feature, and now Gemini is catching up with this privacy option.
Personalised Responses: Smarter Conversations
The second feature, Personalised Responses, makes Gemini more helpful by remembering details from past chats. For example, if you had earlier discussed your favourite comic book, Gemini can later suggest birthday party ideas inspired by those characters.
This builds on Gemini’s existing Memory feature and allows the AI to provide answers that feel more relevant and personal. It can recall not just user preferences but also topics from older conversations.
However, Google confirmed that this feature will initially work only on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model. It is not yet available in the European Union, Switzerland, or the UK, though Google plans to expand it soon and eventually roll it out to the Gemini 2.5 Flash model as well.
User Control
Both features come with settings for user control. Personalised Responses will be on by default, but users can turn it off in the Gemini app by going to Settings > Personal Context > Your past chats with Gemini. Users can also manage or delete past conversations through the Gemini Apps Activity page.
With these changes, Google is aiming to make Gemini not only smarter but also more private, balancing personalisation with data protection.
