Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI, has announced weekly usage limits for its paid subscribers. This change comes after the company found that some users were misusing Claude Code by running it nonstop. These users were using a lot of computing power and even reselling or sharing accounts. To handle this, new rules will apply from August 28 and are expected to affect less than 5 percent of subscribers.
The company said that most users—around 95 percent—will not see any change in their access. The new limits will apply to both Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers. The goal is to make usage fair and reduce the pressure on servers.
New Usage Hours Explained
There are now two kinds of limits: one on total usage across all features and another on Claude Opus 4, their most powerful model. Here’s a basic idea of the new limits:
- Claude Pro users may get 40–80 hours per week using Sonnet 4.
- Max plan users paying $100 (₹8,700) could receive 140–280 hours of Sonnet 4 and 15–35 hours of Opus 4.
- Max plan users paying $200 (₹17,400) may get 240–480 hours of Sonnet 4 and 24–40 hours of Opus 4.
These limits may change depending on how big the code files are or how heavy the tasks are.
Anthropic also said that users on the Max plan can buy more usage at standard API rates if they want. The company is trying to make sure that Claude Code remains useful for everyone without a few users taking unfair advantage.
This change is part of Anthropic’s effort to improve performance, stop account abuse, and manage costs better—especially as AI usage keeps growing.
