Shashi Tharoor says BJP will choose next Vice President

Election to be held in September

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor recently said that he does not know who will become the next Vice President of India. However, he added that it is certain the person will be someone chosen by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Tharoor made this statement after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned suddenly.

The Election Commission of India has announced that the Vice Presidential election will take place on September 9, 2025. The official notification for the election will be issued on August 7. Once this is done, the process of filing nominations will begin.

Shashi Tharoor explained that the Vice President is elected by the members of both houses of Parliament—Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. This is different from the Presidential election, where the members of state legislative assemblies also have the right to vote.

Ruling party has the numbers

Tharoor pointed out that the BJP-led government already has a majority in both houses of Parliament. Because of this, it is very likely that their chosen nominee will become the next Vice President. He said that the ruling party’s numbers make the outcome almost certain.

“All we know is that it will be somebody whom the ruling party nominates, as we already know the composition of the electorate. It’s the two houses of Parliament. Unlike the Presidential election, where the state assemblies also vote. For the Vice President, it’s only the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. So we already know the majority. I think it’s fairly clear that the next vice president will be the nominee of the ruling party,” Tharoor said.

He did not offer any guesses or names about who the candidate could be. However, his remarks show that the opposition parties do not expect to win this election.

As the date for the election nears, political discussions are likely to increase. But according to Tharoor, the final result is already quite predictable because of the numbers in Parliament.
