Veteran leader Nitish Kumar, who has been Chief Minister of Bihar for more than 20 years, has announced a major change in his political career. On Thursday, he filed his nomination papers to contest the Rajya Sabha elections, signalling his farewell to active state politics.
Nitish is stepping away from the top job in Bihar and aiming to become a member of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of India’s Parliament. He shared his decision on social media, saying that he has always wanted to serve in all legislative bodies, including the state assembly and Parliament. Nitish thanked the people of Bihar for their trust and said he will continue to support the state’s development, even from the Rajya Sabha. He also assured that the new government in Bihar will have his full cooperation and guidance.
The move comes just months after Nitish led the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to a big victory in the 2025 Bihar elections. He recently took oath as Chief Minister for a record tenth time, but now appears ready for a new role at the national level.
While some party workers and supporters are disappointed with his decision and protested outside his residence, others see the shift as part of a larger political plan by the NDA. The change creates space for a new leader — likely from the Bharatiya Janata Party — to become the next Bihar Chief Minister. Three leaders often mentioned as possible successors are Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Union Minister Nityanand Rai, and others within the alliance.
There is also talk that Nitish’s son may soon enter politics, though no official decisions have been announced.
This change marks the end of an era in Bihar politics and could reshape leadership in the state ahead of future elections.
