AAP leader Anmol Gagan Maan, MLA from Punjab’s Kharar constituency, has resigned from the Punjab Assembly and announced her decision to quit politics. She sent her resignation to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Saturday.
In an emotional message posted in Punjabi on X (formerly Twitter), Maan wrote, “My heart is heavy, but I have decided to step away from politics. I request the Hon’ble Speaker to accept my resignation from the position of MLA. My best wishes remain with the party. I hope the Punjab Government lives up to the expectations of the people.”
Maan, a well-known singer-turned-politician, had entered politics with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and won the Kharar seat in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. She was later inducted into the state Cabinet, where she handled portfolios such as tourism and culture, investment promotion, labour, and hospitality.
However, her political career saw a setback last year when Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann removed her and three other ministers from the Cabinet during a reshuffle. Following this, her presence in active politics had gradually reduced, leading to speculation about her future in the party.
Before entering politics, Anmol Gagan Maan had a successful career in the Punjabi music industry. She is known for popular songs like Suit, Ghaint Purpose, and Sherni, which earned her a strong fan following. Her transition from music to politics in 2022 was considered a bold move that reflected AAP’s strategy of bringing fresh faces into the political arena.
Her resignation comes at a time when AAP is facing internal challenges, including its recent exit from the INDIA bloc alliance. Maan’s departure is expected to have an emotional impact on her supporters, especially in her constituency, where she maintained a strong connection with the youth.
With her decision to step away, Maan has expressed hope that the Punjab government will continue to work for the welfare of the people and fulfill the promises made during the election campaign.
