Fake or adulterated paneer is becoming a major concern in India. Often made using harmful chemicals like urea, detergents, tinopal, and aloe, this imitation paneer can enter the body and affect the liver, kidneys, and digestive system. Long-term consumption may even lead to kidney or liver failure and increase the risk of cancer. Common symptoms after eating fake paneer include stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, indigestion, and allergic reactions.

How to Identify Real vs Fake Paneer

Real paneer is soft, creamy, and has a mild milky smell. A simple water test can help: real paneer floats, while fake paneer sinks. Fake paneer often stretches like rubber, feels sticky, smells chemical-like, and bounces when pressed. When placed in hot water, fake paneer may dissolve or break apart. Another test involves iodine tincture: real paneer does not change color, whereas fake paneer shows a visible color change.

Other signs of fake paneer include unusual hardness, lack of creaminess, and unnatural elasticity when rubbed between fingers. These simple checks can help ensure you buy safe and healthy paneer for daily meals and festive cooking.
