Dengue, Chikungunya Rise in Bengaluru’s Monsoon

It's raining

Mosquito-borne diseases hit children and pregnant women
With the arrival of the monsoon, cases of dengue and chikungunya are rising quickly in Bengaluru, especially among children and pregnant women. These diseases usually increase during the rainy season when mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. This year, the hot summer followed by the wet monsoon has created ideal conditions for mosquitoes to multiply.

Warm temperatures, high humidity, and water collecting in open spaces like drains, puddles, and plant pots are perfect breeding spots for mosquitoes. In crowded cities like Bengaluru, the risk becomes even higher. Health experts warn that children and pregnant women are more vulnerable to such infections due to weaker immunity.

Why are these groups more at risk?
Children often play outdoors and are more exposed to mosquito bites. Pregnant women, on the other hand, go through many physical and hormonal changes, which can weaken their immune systems. This makes them more likely to catch infections and face complications.

Doctors advise people to take these diseases seriously. Early symptoms include high fever, joint pain, body rashes, and weakness. If not treated early, dengue and chikungunya can lead to dangerous issues like low platelet count, dehydration, or even hospitalization.

Dr. Sunil Kumar Gonuguntala, a pediatrician from Bengaluru, explained that these diseases can be managed well if caught early. He suggests using mosquito repellents, wearing full-sleeved clothes, and keeping the surroundings clean and dry.

Dr. Aparna Jha, a gynecologist, added that pregnant women should be extra careful during this time. Even a mild infection can cause stress or complications in pregnancy.

Prevention is the key
Doctors recommend emptying water containers regularly, using mosquito nets, and avoiding areas with water stagnation. Parents and expecting mothers should also seek medical attention quickly if they notice any unusual symptoms.

As Bengaluru battles this seasonal health issue, awareness and quick action can help prevent further rise in mosquito-borne illnesses. Stay alert, stay protected.
