The Gujarat government has started a new AI-based pilot project to manage the problem of stray cattle in Ahmedabad. The project is being carried out by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation with support from the state’s AI Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar.
Stray cows are a common problem in Ahmedabad and often cause traffic jams and accidents. Until now, civic teams have been tracking cattle manually using CCTV footage, RFID tags, and microchips. This method takes a lot of time and effort.
To improve this system, the AI Centre of Excellence at GIFT City has asked a technology agency to build a deep-learning AI model. This system will scan live CCTV camera feeds and identify cows in real time. It will then match the cow with existing municipal records to find its owner.
The AI system works in a unique way. It studies the nose pattern of a cow, which is different for every animal, similar to a human fingerprint. It also checks facial features and eye patterns to confirm the identity. Once matched, officials can quickly take action against owners who allow their cattle to roam freely.
At present, around 1.1 lakh cows in Ahmedabad have RFID tags and microchips. CCTV cameras installed at 130 major junctions capture images of these animals every day.
If the pilot project is successful, it will help the city reduce traffic problems, prevent accidents, and create a data-based monitoring system for better cattle management. Officials believe this initiative will make Ahmedabad safer and support Gujarat’s goal of building smart and technology-driven cities.
