Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) has completed 20 years and has grown into one of the most important fashion events in the world. Often called the “fifth fashion capital,” the event has become known for promoting sustainability, creativity and strong Nordic design.

The fashion week began in 2006 after two Danish trade fairs joined together. In its early years, it focused mainly on business and trade. Over time, it added runway shows, presentations and exhibitions, slowly gaining global attention. Under its first CEO, Eva Kruse, the event built a strong international image.

A major change came in 2018 when Cecilie Thorsmark became CEO. Under her leadership, CPHFW shifted its focus towards sustainability. In 2020, it introduced minimum sustainability rules for brands to be part of the official schedule. This made Copenhagen Fashion Week the first major fashion week to take such a strong step toward eco-friendly fashion.

In the following years, CPHFW expanded its influence. It partnered with other Nordic fashion events and launched the NewTalent programme in 2022 to support young designers with funding, mentoring and exposure. Well-known brands also began supporting new talent through special patron programmes.

By 2023, sustainability rules became mandatory for all brands on the schedule. These rules were later updated and made stricter to match remember EU policies and industry changes. While the fashion week faced criticism and questions about greenwashing, authorities later decided not to take legal action.

Today, Copenhagen Fashion Week is known for mixing creativity with responsibility. As it enters 2026, it is strengthening international partnerships and welcoming both returning Nordic brands and new global designers.

After 20 years, CPHFW stands as a strong example of how fashion can grow while caring for people, culture and the planet.
