US President Donald Trump said that tariffs imposed by the United States on India’s purchases of Russian oil have caused a big problem for Russia’s economy. He made these remarks during a press briefing at the White House ahead of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Trump explained that Russia’s economy is struggling because of many global pressures, including US tariffs on several countries. He pointed out that India is one of Russia’s largest buyers of oil and that the US has put a 50% tariff on India’s oil imports from Russia.
He said, “Doesn’t help when the President of the United States tells their largest or second-largest oil buyer that we’re putting a 50 per cent tariff on you if you buy oil from Russia. That was a big blow.”
The Trump administration recently added an extra 25% tariff on India’s oil imports from Russia, in addition to a previous 25% tariff. This has made the total tariff 50%. India has strongly opposed these tariffs, calling them unfair and unreasonable. India said it will protect its national interests despite the tariffs.
Trump is scheduled to meet Putin in Alaska to have what he hopes will be “constructive conversations.” He also said he plans to speak with European leaders after the meeting.
In addition, Trump mentioned his intention to help set up a meeting between Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to work on peace talks. He said he will join if needed.
Trump also claimed that he has ended five wars during his second term as president. He said he stopped the conflict between India and Pakistan, but India has denied this claim. India says the ceasefire with Pakistan was made through direct talks between military leaders.
The meeting between Trump and Putin is being closely watched as the US and Russia discuss important global issues, including tensions involving Ukraine and economic sanctions. The impact of US tariffs on oil trade is a key topic, especially with India’s growing role as a buyer of Russian energy.
