Volvo Trucks Unveils First Stop-Start Tech for Heavy Trucks

Volvo Trucks has taken another big step in fuel efficiency and sustainability by launching the world’s first stop-start engine technology for heavy-duty trucks. This new feature, introduced in September 2025, is now available on the Volvo FH and FH Aero models equipped with a 13-litre diesel engine.

Smarter Technology for Cleaner Driving

The stop-start feature is built on Volvo’s well-known I-Roll and I-See technologies. It uses real-time road data and information about road curves to identify when the truck is moving downhill. When this happens, the system temporarily switches off the engine. This means the truck consumes zero fuel and produces no CO2 emissions during that period.

The new function only activates at speeds above 60 kph and is carefully controlled by the system to ensure smooth driving. By doing so, Volvo aims to help truck operators save fuel and reduce costs while also lowering the environmental impact of road transport.

Fuel and Emissions Savings

Depending on conditions like road slopes and temperature, this smart stop-start system can cut up to 1% more fuel and CO2 emissions in addition to the savings already achieved by I-Roll. Even though 1% may seem small, for heavy-duty trucks covering thousands of kilometers every year, it results in significant savings and reduced emissions.

A Step Toward Decarbonization

Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, said: “Our engineers have done it again – innovating a new engine technology that makes transport more fuel-efficient. As part of our decarbonization strategy, we will keep improving combustion engines to reduce environmental impact.”

Volvo’s broader plan for decarbonization includes using renewable fuels for combustion engines, along with the development of battery-electric and fuel-cell electric trucks. This shows the company’s long-term focus on combining innovation with sustainability in the transport sector.

Ready for Customers

The new stop-start technology can be ordered from September 2025. By offering this feature, Volvo Trucks strengthens its position as a leader in innovative, fuel-saving, and eco-friendly solutions for heavy-duty commercial vehicles worldwide.
