Volkswagen Unveils ID Cross Concept Ahead of 2026 Launch

Volkswagen, Europe’s leading electric carmaker, unveiled its new compact SUV, the ID Cross Concept, at the IAA Mobility show in Munich. The five-seat SUV is designed to be both city-friendly and capable of long-distance drives, making it a versatile addition to Volkswagen’s growing ID electric car portfolio.

The ID Cross Concept is the fourth small electric model following the ID.2 all, the ID. GTI Concept, and the ID. Every1. Volkswagen plans to launch production versions of these models from 2026. The ID Cross itself is set for its world premiere in mid-2026. Meanwhile, the ID. The Polo, the production version of the ID.2 all, and the ID. Polo GTI are set to debut in early 2026, introducing the iconic Polo and GTI badges to the electric era.

Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen’s Head of Design, stated that the ID Cross Concept showcases the brand’s new “Pure Positive” design philosophy. With clean lines, strong surfaces, and a modern SUV shape, the ID Cross aims to set trends while reflecting Volkswagen’s identity.

Measuring 4,161 mm in length with a 2,601 mm wheelbase, the ID Cross is similar in size to the T-Cross. Its interior is spacious, offering a 450-litre boot and an extra 25-litre storage compartment under the bonnet. The cabin is designed as a comfort-focused lounge, featuring warm Vanilla Chai tones, fabric-covered surfaces, pre-configured light and climate modes, and seats that fold flat for a VW Bus-style reclining setup.

The cockpit features an intuitive, ergonomic layout with two central displays—a 28 cm digital instrument cluster and a 33 cm infotainment touchscreen—combined with natural voice controls and a redesigned multifunction steering wheel.

The ID Cross Concept is powered by Volkswagen’s new Europe-built electric drive system. The front-wheel-drive SUV is powered by a 155 kW (211 hp) motor integrated with advanced power electronics, while the flat high-voltage battery sits in the sandwich floor. The WLTP-estimated range reaches up to 420 km.

Based on the MEB modular electric drive platform, the ID Cross Concept reflects Volkswagen’s ongoing evolution in electric mobility, combining style, comfort, and performance for the future.
