Compact SUV marks milestone with multi-fuel options and rising demand
Tata Motors’ popular compact SUV, the Tata Nexon, has completed eight years since its launch on September 21, 2017, and is now on the verge of crossing a major milestone of 900,000 sales. With total wholesales of 887,607 units till August 2025, the Nexon is just 12,393 units short of the big number and is expected to cross it this month.
The Nexon has been a game-changer for Tata Motors, becoming the company’s first SUV to reach this level of success. It was crowned India’s No. 1 SUV for three years in a row (FY2022, FY2023, FY2024), though it slipped behind its sibling Tata Punch in FY2025. However, sales have picked up again in FY2026 with 66,984 units sold between April and August 2025, which is higher than Punch sales during the same period.
A wide range of options
One of the biggest reasons for Nexon’s strong run is Tata’s multi-powertrain strategy. Currently, it is available in 76 variants – 31 petrol, 28 diesel, 9 electric, and 8 CNG. This ensures there is a Nexon for every budget and need. The recent GST 2.0 price cut has made the ICE versions cheaper by up to ₹1.25 lakh, increasing its appeal.
The Nexon has also seen two major facelifts – in 2020 and 2023 – which brought fresh styling, modern interiors, and better features. The Nexon EV, with updated tech and performance, has also become a benchmark in affordable electric cars.
Contribution to Tata’s growth
Since its launch, the Nexon has played a big role in Tata Motors’ growth story. It has contributed 29% of the company’s 3.08 million passenger vehicle sales between FY2018 and August 2025. The model not only boosted Tata’s image but also helped the company climb steadily in India’s competitive SUV market.
What’s next?
Tata Motors is already working on the next-generation Nexon, codenamed ‘Garud’, expected in the second half of 2026. It will have a redesigned exterior, new interiors, and updated powertrains. While petrol and CNG are expected to continue, the future of the diesel engine remains uncertain.
