Tata Motors leads but faces tough competition from JSW MG and Mahindra
Electric car and SUV sales in India are growing fast. Between January and July 2025, 90,639 electric passenger vehicles (EVs) were sold. This is a 60% increase compared to 56,814 units sold in the same period last year. July alone saw 15,423 EVs sold—a new monthly record. If this pace continues, total EV sales could cross 1.5 lakh units by the end of the year.
Tata Motors remains the top EV seller with 34,700 units sold in the first seven months. However, its market share has dropped to 38% from 67% last year. Tata’s recent launch of the Harrier EV has helped improve its sales. The new Harrier has a long range of 627 km and has received over 10,000 bookings.
JSW MG Motor India is growing fast with a 214% increase in sales. The company sold 29,381 EVs, thanks to popular models like the Windsor EV and the new M9 MPV. Mahindra & Mahindra also saw a big jump in sales with 15,556 units sold—a 253% rise. Their new SUVs, the BE 6 and XEV 9e, have boosted demand.
Luxury EVs also see growth, led by BMW and Mercedes-Benz
Luxury electric vehicle makers have also performed well. BMW India sold 1,492 EVs between January and July 2025, a 136% increase, making it the leader in the luxury segment with a 58% market share. Mercedes-Benz sold 729 units, growing 65% year-on-year.
BYD India, Hyundai, and other brands also saw higher sales. BYD sold 2,948 units, and Hyundai sold 4,552 units, helped by the launch of the Creta Electric. However, some luxury brands like Volvo, Audi, and Porsche saw drops in their sales numbers.
Overall, the Indian EV market is growing rapidly. With new models, rising demand, and government support, the electric vehicle industry in India is set for a strong year in 2025.
