Apple’s China Smartphone Sales Rise 23% Early in 2026

Apple Inc. has reported a strong start to 2026 in China’s smartphone market, with its sales growing by about 23% in the first nine weeks of the year. This increase comes even as the wider Chinese market showed a decline in overall smartphone sales.

China’s total smartphone market fell by roughly 4% year‑on‑year between January and early March. Factors such as weak consumer demand and higher memory chip costs have hit many smartphone makers, causing some Android brands to raise prices on their phones.

Despite these challenges, Apple used strong e‑commerce promotions and benefited from government subsidies available for its base iPhone 17 model. These moves helped Apple’s phones stand out in a slow market and attract more buyers.

Apple’s supply chain strength also played a key role. The company’s close control of its production and component sourcing has allowed it to absorb some of the rising chip costs without raising prices as much as competitors. This gave Apple a pricing advantage in China while other brands, including popular Android manufacturers, faced tougher cost pressures.

Android phone makers such as OPPO and vivo have raised prices on some models as they deal with higher production costs. Observers say this could make it harder for them to compete with Apple’s more stable pricing.

At the same time, domestic brands like Huawei might benefit from lower costs by using local suppliers, which can help them gain market share in the low‑to‑mid price segment.

Industry analysts expect China’s smartphone market to remain weak through spring but possibly recover later in the year around major shopping events, such as the “618” mid‑year sale period.

Overall, Apple’s growing sales in China show that it is bucking the wider industry trend and strengthening its position in the world’s largest smartphone market.
