A new COVID-19 variant, dubbed ‘Nimbus’ (NB.1.8.1), is raising alarm across India and several other countries due to its unusually painful symptom: a sore throat described by patients as feeling like “razor blades.”
Health authorities are closely tracking this highly contagious strain as it quickly spreads across Asia, already accounting for over 10% of reported cases on the continent. According to recent research, NB.1.8.1 is more transmissible than previous variants and has been detected in multiple countries, including the United States and Canada.
Doctors and virologists warn that the hallmark symptom of this variant is an intensely painful throat, with infected individuals complaining of sharp pain during swallowing and speaking. In addition to this, other common symptoms such as high fever, body aches, fatigue, and cough are also being reported.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has placed NB.1.8.1 under active surveillance due to its rapid transmission and severe presentation. Health experts are urging the public to avoid panic but remain alert, follow COVID-appropriate behavior, and rely only on verified information sources.
Despite the painful symptoms, there is no indication so far that Nimbus causes higher mortality. However, its rapid spread and severe throat pain are prompting many to seek medical help earlier than with previous variants.
With cases rising globally once again, Indian health agencies are ramping up monitoring at airports and public health centers. Citizens are advised to wear masks in crowded places, maintain hygiene, and get tested if symptoms arise.
As the world learns more about this new variant, experts stress the importance of staying informed and prepared—while avoiding misinformation and unnecessary fear.
