The global car industry generally brings to mind six major automotive manufacturers of Toyota Volkswagen Ford Tesla BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The primary automotive power centers of Japan Germany and the United States together with South Korea and India represent automotive industry leaders. Iran Khodro stands as the biggest Iranian automotive manufacturer after its establishment in 1962. The company initially manufactured Renault and Peugeot vehicles through licensing agreements. The company produced its most popular vehicle Paykan between 1967 and 2005 which derived its design from the British Hillman Hunter. The company later launched the Samand which The company built based on the Peugeot 405 platform. Iran Khodro enters a modernization phase through its upcoming vehicle Reera which will become available in 2024 as both a petrol and an electric vehicle.

SAIPA stands as another key automotive manufacturer. The company began its Citroën production operations in 1965. SAIPA initiated its own vehicle development program after the French automaker exited the Iranian market. The company produces well-known vehicles which include Tiba Saina and Quik. SAIPA used to produce Kia Pride vehicles under license but later developed their own vehicle designs.

Iran maintains its automotive export operations to Iraq and Azerbaijan and Venezuela, despite facing international automotive supply chain isolation. The Iranian automotive sector continues to operate at a remarkable production capability, which exceeds one million vehicles annually, despite facing international trade limitations.
