Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that coal will continue to play an important role in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation, or Viksit Bharat, by the year 2047.
On Monday, PM Modi shared an article written by Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy on social media platform X. The article explained how India’s coal sector has changed over the last 11 years and is now working as a next-generation fuel. The Prime Minister said coal will grow along with green technologies and support India’s long-term development goals.
According to an official statement, India recorded its highest-ever coal production in the financial year 2024–25. Total coal production stood at 1,047.52 million tonnes, up from 997.83 million tonnes in 2023–24. This shows a growth of nearly 5 per cent.
Coal supply has also increased. In FY 2024–25, coal supply reached 1,025.33 million tonnes, compared to 973.01 million tonnes in the previous year. This marks a growth of over 5 per cent.
The government also highlighted long-term growth in the sector. Coal production has almost doubled over the past decade, rising from 565.77 million tonnes in FY 2013–14 to more than 1,047 million tonnes in FY 2024–25.
During the calendar year 2025, India produced about 1,042.90 million tonnes of coal, slightly higher than the previous year. Coal supply during this period also increased to around 1,016 million tonnes. Officials said there were no reports of coal shortages, and supply remained smooth across the country.
Coal continues to be the backbone of India’s energy sector. It provides over 55 per cent of the country’s primary commercial energy and around 72 per cent of total power generation. The government said coal will remain vital for India’s energy security in the years ahead.
