Hyundai Motor Company announced on December 16, 2025, that its all-new NEXO hydrogen fuel-cell SUV has earned a five-star rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). The vehicle scored 90 percent for adult occupant protection and 85 percent for child safety, highlighting its robust safety credentials.
The NEXO performed exceptionally across all four Euro NCAP assessment categories: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, vulnerable road user protection, and safety assistance systems. During adult occupant testing, the passenger compartment remained stable in frontal offset tests, providing strong protection for the knees, femurs, and other body areas. The SUV received maximum points in side barrier tests and was rated “good” for whiplash protection in both front and rear seats.
Child safety evaluations also reflected the NEXO’s commitment to protection. Test dummies representing six- and ten-year-old children were well-protected in frontal and side-impact tests, earning the SUV maximum points. The vehicle features a front passenger airbag deactivation system with clear status indication and supports the use of approved child restraint systems, ensuring additional safety for young passengers.
This achievement marks the fourth consecutive five-star Euro NCAP rating for Hyundai’s electrified lineup, following the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and IONIQ 9. The original NEXO, introduced in 2018, was the first fuel-cell electric vehicle tested by Euro NCAP, and it too received five stars under the standards at that time.
Operating on a hydrogen fuel-cell system, the NEXO emits only water vapor, reinforcing Hyundai’s zero-emission vehicle strategy alongside its battery-electric models. The SUV combines advanced safety engineering with eco-friendly performance, positioning it as a leader in sustainable mobility.
Established in 1997, Euro NCAP provides independent crash and safety assessments for vehicles sold in Europe. Supported by European governments, consumer organizations, and mobility groups, Euro NCAP helps car buyers make informed safety choices.
With its latest rating, the Hyundai NEXO not only demonstrates the highest standards of safety but also strengthens the company’s reputation in hydrogen-powered mobility and eco-conscious vehicle design.
