Vi to Launch Smart Link Protection to Block Fraudulent Messages

AI-Powered Protection for Users

Vodafone Idea (Vi) is set to roll out a new AI-driven safety feature, Smart Link Protection, aimed at shielding users from fraudulent links. The feature will analyse and block malicious links in real time at the network level, ensuring that users do not need to take any manual action to stay protected. This marks a significant step in Vi’s ongoing efforts to combat rising online scams and phishing attacks.

How Smart Link Protection Works

According to reports, Smart Link Protection will function as the first line of defence against malicious URLs and suspicious links sent via SMS. By leveraging advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms, the system pre-identifies harmful content before it reaches users’ devices. This proactive approach prevents scammers from tricking consumers into revealing sensitive information.

The network-level implementation ensures automatic real-time filtering, allowing users to continue their daily smartphone activities without disruptions. Once activated, the feature will automatically detect and block potentially harmful links, reducing the risk of identity theft, phishing attacks, and unauthorized access to personal data.

Building on Previous Anti-Spam Measures

Smart Link Protection expands on Vi’s AI-based spam SMS protection system launched in 2024. The earlier solution analysed incoming messages to detect spam and fraudulent content in real time, including suspicious URLs, unwanted promotions, and potential identity theft attempts. Automated machines trained on millions of spam instances monitored and filtered messages effectively, safeguarding users from threats.

Additionally, Vi has implemented other anti-spam measures, including options to file complaints via the Vi mobile app, detect unsolicited commercial communications (UCC), and monitor bulk call patterns. These initiatives collectively aim to enhance customer safety and reduce exposure to digital fraud.

Industry Context and Competitor Solutions

Vi’s move aligns with similar initiatives in the telecom sector. For instance, Airtel introduced a network-based anti-spam solution last year, capable of detecting both spam calls and messages. By leveraging AI and ML at the network level, these telecom operators are taking proactive measures to tackle the growing problem of digital scams.

With Smart Link Protection, Vi aims to provide greater security, peace of mind, and uninterrupted digital experience to its subscribers. Users can expect the feature to be rolled out in the coming days, marking a significant improvement in how telecom providers protect consumers from online threats.
