Apple M5 iPad Pro May Add Second Front Camera

Apple is reportedly planning to add a second front-facing camera to its upcoming M5-powered iPad Pro. This new addition aims to fix complaints from users about the current camera placement introduced in the 2024 iPad Pro.

Why a Second Camera?

The iPad Pro (2024) featured a major change in its front camera design. The 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera was moved from portrait to landscape orientation, making FaceTime calls easier when the iPad is used horizontally. However, some users found this change inconvenient, especially for unlocking the device or taking selfies in portrait mode.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s solution is straightforward — instead of shifting the camera back to portrait orientation, the company plans to add a second front camera in the portrait position. This would allow users to use Face ID, selfies, and video calls comfortably in both portrait and landscape modes.

Expected Features and Launch Timeline

The upcoming M5 iPad Pro is not expected to feature major hardware redesigns. The main updates will likely include the new M5 chip for improved performance and the additional front camera. Other features from the 2024 model, such as the tandem OLED display, nano-texture screen coating, and overall design, will remain unchanged.

The M5 iPad Pro is expected to enter mass production in the second half of 2025. This suggests that the launch could take place later this year.

What’s Next for iPads?

Following the M5 iPad Pro, Apple is rumored to refresh its entry-level iPad and iPad Air models early next year. The standard iPad might receive a faster processor, while the iPad Air could be upgraded to the Apple M4 chip, bringing it closer to the Pro lineup in terms of performance.

Mark Gurman describes the dual-camera setup as a “small but useful upgrade” rather than a revolutionary change. Still, it shows Apple’s focus on user experience and flexibility.

With this upgrade, the iPad Pro will cater equally well to users regardless of whether they prefer holding the device in portrait or landscape mode.
