Tesla is ramping up its plans in India. The American electric car maker has leased a 24,500 sq ft office and service center in Kurla West, Mumbai. This marks Tesla’s fourth office in India, showing it is getting serious about its future in the country

What Tesla Just Did

  • Tesla India Motor & Energy signed a five-year lease for a big office in Lodha Industrial and Logistics Park, Kurla West.
  • The lease starts from April 20, 2025, with rent of ₹37.53 lakh per month.
  • Over five years, Tesla will pay more than ₹24 crore in rent
  • They also got a rent-free period of one month and ten days, so rent payments start June 1, 2025
  • Rent and maintenance charges will increase 5% every year

Why It Matters

  1. Fourth Commercial Footprint
    Tesla already has:
    • An engineering office in Pune
    • A registered office in Bengaluru
    • A 30-seat workspace/showroom in BKC, Mumbai The new Kurla space is their fourth.
  2. Service Centre Setup
The Kurla office will serve as a dedicated vehicle service center, a first in India
  3. Building Local Ecosystem
This move shows Tesla is not just testing India—it’s preparing for manufacturing, supply chain, and local service infrastructure
  4. Post-Modi-Musk Momentum
After PM Narendra Modi met Elon Musk in February during Modi’s U.S. visit, Tesla’s India strategy has picked up speed
  5. Policy Support
India recently introduced policies to encourage global EV makers to set up local production. Moves like these leases suggest Tesla is quietly laying groundwork

How This Fits Tesla’s Bigger Plan

  • First Showroom in India: Tesla already leased a showroom in BKC, Mumbai, at record rent of about ₹881 per sq ft per month
  • Showrooms in Delhi and Mumbai: Chosen locations in BKC and Aerocity for sales of imported EVs
  • Service & Warehouse: Kurla office will store cars and service them—essential pre-print build-out
  • Other Offices:
    • Pune engineering facility
    • Bengaluru registered office
    • Mumbai work-space in BKC (30 seats)

Why Tesla Is Doing This Now

  1. Preparation for Sales
Tesla plans to import and sell EVs in India. First showroom leases and service centers are key steps.
  2. Future Manufacturing Hints
With supportive policies in place, Tesla may plan for local assembly or factory over time.
  3. Building Infrastructure
More than showrooms—Tesla aims for full-service ability: storage, servicing, parts.
  4. Market Confidence
These big leases show Tesla is ready to invest long-term in India.

What Comes Next

  • More Showrooms: Likely in New Delhi (Aerocity) and other metros.
  • Hiring: Tesla job listings in India include legal, finance, technical roles.
  • Factory Site Planning?: No location confirmed yet. Maharashtra, Gujarat expected picks.
  • EV Launch: Cars likely imported until local assembly starts.

Takeaway for India

Tesla’s new office in Mumbai:

  • Marks the fourth office in India
  • Brings service and warehousing capability
  • Ensures operational readiness for entering the Indian EV market
  • Signals long-term commitment, especially after policy gains and Modi-Musk talks.

Tesla isn’t just testing India’s waters anymore—it’s building a local ecosystem. With showrooms, service centers, and engineering offices already in place, Tesla is laying solid groundwork for a full-scale entry into India’s EV space.
